iKapa Reticulation & Flow Klipdale Rally

Date:
Saturday, February 25, 2017
Location:
Klipdale, Overberg

Great news for the opening round of the Western Cape Regional Championship is the fact that no less than three teams are making the trip from Namibia to compete locally. Son and father, Jacques and Leon Botha, will want to prove that their shortlived flash time in the ex-Schalk Burger S5 Afrideca Plant Hire Subaru STi WRX 4x4 Turbo. Ironically Leon Botha beat Schalk Burger on the national Overberg Rally many moons ago to take the N4 production car victory in much a similar car to the one which father and daughter Willem and Mandi Hugo will be campaigning. Their bright green Griffin Mining & Transport Gp N4 Subaru Impreza 4x4 Turbo at risk as the lack of rain could see the animals wanting to tuck in if they stop too long.

Leon Botha and Francois Jordaan two of the most hair raising competitors ever to set foot in any rally car and they chopped off power lines enroute to some impressive results which, normally, would have been even better had they not experienced something bordering on crazy enroute. Navigatng for Jacques is something this writer thought most unlikely as the interior of the Scooby would simply not accommodate the two hot heads. Apparently they are now older and calmer - we shall see soon enough! Throw the current editor of the Rallystar website, Andries van der Walt, into the equation and the resultant article should even have Francois Jordaan in tears afterwards.

How does one introduce Oswaldo Mendes? One of the stalwarts of rallying in Namibia for as long as I can remember Oswaldo is a very talented and versatile individual and as such the Swakopmund based Portugese Namibian will be contesting a number of WP rallies in 2017 as a Witzenberg Motorklub member and with an MSA licence. Thinus Malan will be leaving his interesting Toyota MR2 rally car at home to navigate the Skyway S5 Subaru Impreza WRX 4x4 Turbo.

It is not far, it's very far to travel from Swakopmund and Windhoek respectively and we thank these true enthusiasts for the effort they are making to be present in the Overberg on 25 February 2017. The numbers function and Entry will be taking place at the customary CPMCC Rollbar on Wednesday 16 February 2017 and encouragingly a number of new and old combinations are set to feature. Rallying might have taken a knock, but it's the way in which you recover that truly measures the strength of the sport. Watch this space in the Western Cape!

Round one of the Western Cape special stage rally championship welcomes a new title sponsor in iKapa Reticulation & Flow and the seven stage event is set to start at 10h00 with the first crew finishing at the well known Klipdale Co-op 16h30. Format to follow the traditional super fast roads with occasional surprise and every spectator point is within 15km from the Klipdale HQ.

Not only are there said to be many new combinations returning to the regional championship, there will also be a number of visiting Namibian combinations. Jacques Botha is the son of Rallystar bossman, Leon Botha, and though they rarely share the cockpit of any car the combination surprised on the 48th WMC Tara Rally Namibia. Armed with the FIA Africa Rally Championship winning Subaru Impreza WRX STi 4x4 Turbo of Schalk Burger Snr the Afrideca Plant Hire entry has the potential to dominate local proceedings should it prove reliable.

oswaldo Mendes represent the Swakopmund side of Namibia but will have Thinus Malan navigating his Gp N4 specification Skyway Subaru Impreza 4x4 Turbo. As the most distant member of the Witzinberg Motorklub this will be the first stop on a season where the combination intends on contesting a variety of Western Cape Rallies.

Now the local teams will hopefully start releasing information of their individual intentions for 2017!

Fresh from winning the opening round of the Northern Regions Rally Championship, the Hallspeed Bronkhorstspruit Rally,  on Saturday 18 February 2017 must make Jacques and Leon Botha favourites for outright victory on the opening round of the Western Province Rally Championship, the iKapa Reticulation & Flow CCMCC Klipdale Rally, Saturday 25 February 2017.

Saturday 25 February 2017 provided special stage rally supporters in the Western Cape with good reason to feel good about their favourite motorsport as the annual Overberg Grand Prix certainly delivered in all aspects. An air of expectancy could be sensed during documentation on Saturday 25 February 2017 and the presence of four Namibian teams topped an already impressive 25 car entry.
