Rafique - Take 5

Saturday 16 November 2019 saw a double header Gymkhana close the 2019 Witzenberg Motorklub Gymkhana Championship at the Killarney International Raceway. Twenty one scoring teams entered the 4th Wheel Tech Gymkhana and did they put on a performance of note!

Rafique Firfirey and Abdul Sayed joined forces in the Firfirey Motor Holdings class G Mini Cooper S Turbo 1.6 and although the 2017 Witzenberg Motor Club Gymkhana Champion had not been present for the first four events he certainly did not need much practice. Setting fastest time of the day the opposition simply could not come close.

Kyle van Dyk and Marcel van der Walt certainly lived up to expectations with another impressive showing in their Tuned2Race class E Nissan 350Z by finishing in a strong second place thanks to two very good times. Defending champion, Leon Engelbrecht, struggled to find his form and with izak van Zyl Jnr navigating third place was somewhat disappointing in the L&M Automotive performance class G VW Golf MkII GTi 2.0 16v Turbo.

Anton Smit and Natasha de Jager a mighty fourth overall in their Navara Junior class F Datsun LDV powered by a 1600 Toyota engine. Sean Pretorius and Marco dos Santos struggled to come to terms with the obvious abundance of power available in the Powerbrake class G Subaru N14 STi 2.5 Turbo AWD and fifth overall certainly did not reflect the potential of this combination.

After a three year lay-off Jan van der Vyver and Colbrin Sieberhagen celebrated their return with a splendid sixth position overall in the Race-Tech class D VW Golf Citi MkI 1.4i. Günther and Louise Appelgryn clearly down on form in seventh overall with the Spiderman class B VW Golf Citi MkI 1.8. Günther injured his shoulder and fighting the limited slip differential and handbrake proved to be quite a tiring challenge.

Abdul Sayed and Leon Engelbrecht enjoyed a good run in the JTC Auto Tools class D Toyota Tazz 1.3 and 8th overall was really commendable whilst ninth overall was also pretty impressive for Johann Zulch and Tania Vermaak in the Ceres Toyota assisted class E BMW E30 325iM. The top te completed by Barend Haasbroek and Jonelle Reynolds in their impressive DRS Aotoworx class G Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5 Turbo AWD.

André Smit and Natasha de Jager was quite content with eleventh overall in their DRS Autoworx class C VW Golf Citi MkI 1.6. Twelfth overall going to the Most Spectacular Driver of the Day, Izak van Zyl Jnr, and Mike Mathee in the awesomely impressive 4.0 V8 Twin Turbo Lexus powered class G Toyota Corolla.

Marco dos Santos and Megan Meineke brought the black class G Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5 Turbo AWD home in thirteenth spot whilst Ijaaz Sayed and Amaan Vally impressed as the highest placed newcomers in fourteenth spot with their class F Nissan Champ 1.4 LDV. Nasmie Majiet and Abbas Sabley initially only wanted to do one event but having finished fifteenth on debut they opted to do both in the class G VW Polo Turbo 1.8.

Hennis and Kelso van Zyl returned in their class E Toyota 86 and this father and son combination were well pleased with sixteenth overall after some entertaining driving. Stefan Schoeman and Kurt Jantjies could probably have finished much higher that seventeenth had they resisted the temptation to drive their neat class E BMW E36 328i less sideways.

Byron Hite and Tania Vermaak gave their level best in the completely standard class D Toyota Tazz 1.3 but eighteenth overall was the best possible in this car. Jonelle Reynolds and Barend Haasbroek swopped seats in the DRS Autoworx class G Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5 Turbo AWD and she finished a very nervous nineteenth overall on debut.

Emille Botha and Tania Vermaak another to fail the temptation and sideways driving limited the results for the class E Nissan 350Z to twentieth place with newcomers Joshua Mouton and Andrew Odendaal almost unwittingly repeating a route error on each of their four runs, resulting in them not being classified as finishers in their class B VW Golf MkII 1.8.

Sean Pretorius nailed the single seater category in his Powerbrake Subaru N14 STi 2.5 Turbo AWD with Jan van der Vyver second in his Race-Tech VW Golf Citi MkI 1.4i and Günther Appelgryn third in the Spiderman VW Golf Citi MkI 1.8.

A howling Cape Doctor made documentation and general spectating quite a challenge but those present were treated to a great spectacle as each team truly delivered in terms of performance. With a second event on the itinerary there was not much time to celebrate the result before competitors had to form up for their next event.
