Rally vs Challenge on All Tar Rally

Mike Nathan and Derek Jacobs will start the Fix-a-Smash All Tar Rally / Challenge as outright favourites in their S5 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 Turbo 4x4 and the CPMCC entry will also be defending rallying honour against some formidable Challenge entries.

As have become the norm this annual compact and spectator friendly tarmac event inevitably leads to a classic Rally vs Challenge contest where cars from other categories of motorsport challenge the rallyists to the honour of being the fastest on total times for the day. To date the rallyists have been on top of their game, but certainly not as dominant as they would prefer to be.

Dirk Kruger Snr and Jnr have done the tarmac challengers proud by finishing second, just one second shy of overall victory in their G&A Promotions class B Midas Clubmans Toyota Corolla. As a former South African four cylinder oval track champion Dirk is certainly more than capable of taking on anyone and the nimble Toyota always impressive. Ettiene du Toit and Patrick Vermaak the one second victor in their Ugly Duckling Gp N2 Toyota Corolla RXi 1.6. Ettiene currently leading the Senior category of the national Engen Polo Cup Series.

Six stages will be presented within the Killarney Motorsport Complex and two of these will be in the traditional Super Special format where two teams will go head to head in entertaining fashion. With the WP Regional Rally Championship at stake the rally teams will be concentrating on points rather than being spectacular, but personal pride will certainly see them defend against the track challengers.

Winston Neethling and Lyle Maris return to the fray in the ex-Hannes Grobler S5 Nissan Sentra 4x4. Fitted with a freshly rebuilt engine the Nissan duo have gradually developed into a very solid combination that could surprise when the overall results are posted. Clinton Sassman have been trying to lure Teletubby, Thorsten Pey, into the navigators seat of the E30 class S4 BMW 325i with the intent that they share the drive stage for stage? Interesting concept, but Pau does not exactly enjoy being a navigator! Standby for announcements.

Abduraghman Amlay normally have Yusuf Ganief as navigator in the rapid S4 Toyota Run X RSi 1.8 and this car is always extremely competitive at Killarney. A season of not rallying could however be telling as they will have to be ready from the opening stage if they intend winning.

In complete contrast Ashley Haigh-Smith and Lourens van Rensburg is on top of their game in their impressive S3 Ford Fiesta R2 1.6 machines. Ashley have proven extremely quick on every national event this year, only to suffer unfortunate mechanical maladies in the Castrol Ford. He would dearly like to put this status behind him with a competitive outing before going to Polekwane later in October.

Lourens van Rensburg and Jason Plumbly have shown great potential as relative newcomers to rallying in their similar Piazza Motorsport prepared LLJ Films / LLJ Racing S3 Ford. When Lourens made his rallying debut at Killarney with the very desirable Ford Escort BDA he managed to put it on it’s roof. This year Kesevan Naidoo (navigator in the BDA) will be present as the Clerk of the Course and the beautifully restored BDA remains under lock and key. Luke van rensburg set to make his rallying debut in the yellow submarine, the Gp N2 Mitsubishi Lancer GT1600 of Andy Haigh-Smith.

Keenan Sassman has the services of Uwe “Farmer” Pey as navigator in the S3 Toyota Corolla RXi 1.6 and they are more than capable of ruffling a few feathers along the way. The youngster is quick behind the wheel and Uwe knows Killarney well as navigator.

Team acciDent Guru will be limited to just two entries this weekend with Paul van Wyk and Divan de Goede heading the challenge in their S3 VW Golf MkI 2.0 and in support they will have Tiaan Rabe and Henry Köhne in the more sedate S2 VW Golf MkI 1.6. Divan de Goede and Henry Köhne normally a combination in their Gp N2 Toyota Corolla RSi 1.6  - currently being rebuilt by acciDent Guru.

Henry Köhne also the navigator for Paul-Hendrik Franken in the Manitou Group S1600 VW polo R2 1.6 20v on national championship events and the S4 Nissan Skyline GTX 2.8 in regional rallies. The Skyline have reached the end of it’s long rallying career and with no interim regional car Henry is now free to navigator for former navigator of Piet Bakkes, Tiaan Rabe. It gets even more involved as Tiaan is the son of the brother of Neels Rabe – who was the commentator on the recent Toyota Dealer Cape Town Rally and who may be heard on Motorsport Fokus – Radio Tygerberg 104Fm every Thursday evening between 20h00-21h00.

This will be the second event for Tiaan Rabe in his “lemoen” and he certainly impressed on debut at Klipdale. Another WBMK team starting their second rally will be Jacques Jansen van Vuuren and Jano Botes in their Vredendal Toyota S3 Toyota Run X RSi 1.6. Showing impressive pace at Klipdale this combination will be looking for another confidence building run at Killarney in their ex-Duncan English Run X.

Cousins, Darren and Llewellyn van Greunen, will be in the green corner of the 1.4i VW Citi Golf MkI category with brothers, Justin and Shane Hoskins, in the white corner with their similar car. Darren and Llewellyn have proven to be consistent finishers whilst Justin and father, Brian, have proven quicker but prone to non-finishing. With Brian jumping ship to a Challenge car on this occasion it will be interesting to follow the progress of the brothers Hoskins.

Trevor Hodges have Clint Lawrence as navigator for the All Tar and with a podium position I Klipdale the S3 VW Golf III GTi driver could well prove deceptively quick at Killarney as he has contested the Clubmans series in the same vehicle.

Gavin Grierson end Terry Croy will return with 2.8 power in the classic S4 Nissan 160U SSS whilst Clint and Lloyd Lingeveldt will be enjoying another outing in their S3 Toyota Avanté. Fagerie Isaacs and Tariq Khatib will also be keen to finish without any problems in their S3 VW Golf MkI 2.0 whilst Julian Calvert is set to have the services of Louise de Goede as navigator in the S3 VW Golf MkIII 2.0.

Ian “tarmac terrorist” Long has Brian “clerk of the course” Hoskins as navigator in the class B VW Polo and few would argue that this should prove to be the quickest combination on the circuit. No mistakes and reliability will however be key to them not only challenging Dirk Kruger Snr and Jnr for the Challenge honours, but overall victory. Gerhard Cloete also present in a very quick class C VW Polo 2.0 whilst the class B Toyota Tazz of Brian Hepburn can never be discounted either.

Dexter Bruce and Ernest Page return in the sometimes rally car class B VW Golf MkI 2.0 and former gymkhana driver, Ian Herbst, has the experienced André Sadie as navigator in the blue class B VW Golf MkII GTi 2.0 formerly campaigned by Morné Roux in the WBMK Gymkhana Series. Rishay Moodley and Jody Eadie campaigning the ex-Murudker class C BMW E30 1.9 whilst Yesegan Moodley and Theo Croy return in their neat class C Toyota Conquest. Ashlyn Moodley and Jean-Pierre Jacobs will be in action with the class A Daihatsu Charade.

Francoise Groenewald and Jaco van Zyl will be driving the very nimble and impressive little class A Datsun GX Coupé whilst the class B Nissan Silvia 200SX of Scott Burden and Gary Rodkin has the potential to surprise. Steve Bekker (Fine Cars Racer) and Henry Langenhoven has been entered in a class B Opel Kadett 1.8.
