Swakopmund Rally - NRC2

Swakopmund, Namibia

Round 2 of the 2014 Namibian Rally Championship is scheduled for Saturday 3 May 2014 and moves approximately 40km higher up against the Namibian coastline for what can only be described as a completely different event.

Walvis Bay presented competitors with a challenging route which included high speed and rough and it became a calculated result for all. Swakopmund retains the fast and goes even faster with a few nasty surprises for the unwary.

Can the two supremely quick Scoobies of Willie Dames and Dick Cornelissen comes into their own on this event? A calm head and steady right foot could see them present a stonewall for the S2000 entries of Wilro Dippenaar and Allan Martin. Wilro wants his championship back and Allan wants to defend the title back to back. Willie and Dick have nothing to lose in their challenge to reign supreme and this sets the scene for a terrific battle at the front of the Namibian field.

Should any of these four slip there are a number of strong up-and-coming drivers that will happily accept top positions. Riaan and Maretha Olivier currently the cream of the bratpack in their Subaru Impreza 4x4 Turbo. Disappointing was the appearance of Stefanie Botha and Willem Hugo in their Subaru Impreza Turbo 4x4 rather than the Griffin Cars S2000 Toyota Run X 4x4 in which they showed so much promise during 2013. Hopefully they will be back in the Toyota and continue working towards that elusive first overall victory for a lady on Namibian soil.

In the smaller 1600 categories the challenge is equal in severity with Hannes Arangies the leading contender in his Toyota. Impressively clean lines carries great pace through any instruction without risking his car too much but there are quite a number who would like to prove they can live with him on any surface. Roland Himmel has the ability and the car in the Etios R2 to challenge and win, so too Jan Everson in his Seal Consulting Engineering VW Polo R2 1600. Hanré Myburgh is there too and hopefully he will be able to hear his navigator this time.

Combining the very high gearing with the willing right foot of Dick Cornelissen had Melvin Gous determined not to miss a note as navigator in the Star Bodyworks S4 Subaru WRX STi Turbo 4x4. Winning seven of the nine stages contested (SS2 was cancelled) on the 2014 event they have clearly stated their intent to claim the overall championship.
